The most useful business lessons from aviation are not about command and control. They are about designing work so capable people can coordinate, notice risk, challenge assumptions and recover when reality differs from the plan.
Here are ten disciplines worth borrowing.
1. Brief before the work begins
A good briefing creates shared intent before pressure arrives. It clarifies the plan, likely threats, roles, decision points and what would make the team change course.
Businesses often brief only after confusion appears. Reverse the order.
2. Use checklists for the predictable
Checklists are not substitutes for expertise. They protect attention from forgetting predictable critical steps while leaving judgement available for what is unusual.
If experienced people repeatedly solve the same avoidable problem, the organisation should ask what deserves to become a checklist, prompt or standard.
3. Make roles explicit under pressure
In normal conditions, ambiguity can be absorbed. Under pressure it becomes expensive. Aviation makes command, monitoring and task allocation visible because coordination degrades when everybody assumes somebody else owns the problem.
4. Protect attention during critical phases
The sterile-cockpit principle recognises that some periods deserve fewer distractions. Businesses need equivalents: product launches, payroll, major customer transitions, incident recovery or high-stakes decisions.
Not every interruption deserves equal access to attention.
5. Anticipate threats and errors rather than pretending they will disappear
Threat and Error Management begins with an adult assumption: threats exist and humans will make errors. The task is to anticipate, trap and mitigate them before consequences accumulate.
That is very different from a culture that treats every error as evidence of a bad person.
6. Cross-check consequential work
Independent cross-checks are deliberate redundancy. They cost time and therefore look inefficient, right up until they catch something expensive.
The business question is not “Can one person do this?” but “What is the consequence if the one person is wrong?”
7. Make handovers an operational event
A handover is not merely sending a message. It transfers context, ownership, risk and intent. Good handovers make incomplete work and uncertainty visible rather than hiding them behind “FYI”.
8. Design speaking up into the system
Crew Resource Management developed partly because technical competence was insufficient when authority gradients prevented useful challenge. Good teams need explicit permission and mechanisms to surface concern, especially when status differences are large.
9. Debrief to convert experience into capability
Experience is a poor teacher if only the people who lived it get to learn from it. Debriefs turn events into shared learning, and shared learning into changed behaviour, training or process.
10. Pay for contingency before you need it
Aviation deliberately carries things it hopes not to use: fuel reserves, alternate plans, redundancy, spare capacity and trained responses. Robust organisations also require slack.
Maximum utilisation can make a system look efficient while making it brittle.
Do not copy aviation blindly
Aviation is highly regulated, safety-critical and unusually procedural. Most businesses should not imitate its bureaucracy or assume that cockpit practices transfer unchanged.
The deeper principle is more useful: process for the predictable, training for the probable, judgement for the uncertain, and learning feeding the whole system.
